These oddities are Mavic's only non-electronic indexed shifters. They require a lot of force to modulate. There's only have one set of clicks, but with a Mavic 840 derailleur you can change the cable routing to allow for 6 or 7/8-speed indexing.

There is a hack to do rear friction shifting, but I'm not sure how well it works under stress since there is no ratcheting mechanism like on the front side. Shifts nicely on the stand, though.

May eventually be swapped out for a Dura Ace 9 downtube setup.

NOS Suntour Sprint retro friction replace old Campagnolo Super Record. This is one swap out of old for old that might cost me dollars rather than earn me dollars. We'll see. I love retro-friction shifting though.
